The Northrop T-38 Talon, a twinjet supersonic jet training aircraft, traces its origins to the N-156 project. This initiative emerged from discussions with General Electric Aviation, which proposed a lightweight yet powerful engine for future aircraft. Subsequently, an agreement was reached to develop a lightweight fighter featuring General Electric J85 engines. The aircraft underwent modifications in the mid-1950s to fulfill a trainer requirement issued by the U.S. Air Force, ultimately receiving the designation T-38 Talon. Remarkably, the Talon retains the distinction of being the world’s first supersonic trainer and remains in production and active service to the present day.
