What is a Static Frequency Converter?

SFCs convert a fixed voltage and frequency to a different voltage and frequency, delivering a stable output voltage that matches the requirements of the connected equipment. These converters are used to power systems that operate at a specific voltage and frequency, such as aircraft or military systems (115VAC, 400Hz). They allow this equipment to function even when only a standard UK mains AC power supply is available (230VAC, 50Hz). As SFCs have no moving parts, they are both efficient and robust. They can also be used to convert from single to three-phase depending on the power source.

Static frequency converters are widely used in the aviation industry. They convert standard mains power (50/60Hz) into aircraft power (115VAC, 400Hz), providing the correct output voltage and frequency for ground-based systems to replicate onboard aircraft power. These converters are essential for developing, testing, or repairing aircraft equipment without needing the aircraft itself.
