The Beechcraft 36 Bonanza is a derivative of the predecessing Beechcraft 33 Debonair. The 33 Debonair is a single-engine, high performance, light aircraft with retractable landing gear, utilising a Continental IO-470-J piston engine. To create the new 36 Series design in 1968, Beechcraft had extended the fuselage of the 33 Debonair, to allow for additional seats and passenger windows, as well as swapping the engine to a Continental IO-550-B.
