The Bell OH-58 Kiowa, later designated CH-136 Kiowa, comprises a family of single-engine, single-rotor military helicopters used for observation, utility, and direct fire support. Bell Helicopter manufactured the OH-58 for the United States Army based on its Model 206A JetRanger helicopter. Bell had previously competed against 12 other companies as part of a proposal made by the United States Navy to create a light observation helicopter but fell short against rival companies. However, this led to the production of the Bell 206A, which eventually won the re-opened competition in 1967. The aircraft was designated as the OH-58A by the U.S. Army, and following timely naming conventions, it was given the Kiowa designation as well.
