The DeHavilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter, now known as the Viking Air DHC-6 Twin Otter, is a 19-passenger utility aicraft with STOL performance. The development of the new line started in 1964, with designs based on the predecessing single-engine DHC-3. The line became popular in several sectors, such as medevac aircraft, commuter passenger or cargo airliner, and often used for skydiving. The success came by as a result of the the DHC-6 Twin Otter’s fixed tricycle undercarriage, twin Pratt & Whitney PT6A-20 turboprop engines and high rate of climb. The DHC-6 Twin Otter rapidly became popular as a bush plane, as a result of the improved reliability of turboprop power and the improved performance of a twin-engine configuration.
