The Aérospatiale SA 315B Lama is a single-engine, utility helicopter, introduced in 1971. The SA 315 Lama was originally designed upon a requirement issued by the Indian Armed Forces. They were in need of an aircraft for hot and high operations, and able to perform in the challenging circumstances posed by the mountain ranges of the Himalayas. Aérospatiale proposed the new design as, using the Alouette II’s light airframe, combined with some components and the powerplants of the successing Alouette III. The company worked to ensure that the SA 315B performs exceptionally in high altitude operations, and that service ceiling is increased. The aircraft proved to be a success worldwide, and was one of the primary rotorcrafts used in mountainous environments.
