The Cessna 500 Citation I is a small twin-engine corporate business jet, becoming the first aircraft in the Citation family. In the late 1960s Cessna announced the development of an eight-seat jet, creating the Fanjet 500 prototype, which was then further improved and re-designated the Citation. The aircraft utilised twin Pratt & Whitney JT15D-1 turboprop powerplants and had straight wings, resulting in a much slower cruise speed than its competitiors at the time. Eventhough the Citation I did not become as successful as anticipated, it served as an excellent basis for further variants, such as the Citation II.
