Product spotlight – Ground Power Units

This week, we’re putting the spotlight on all the Ground Power Units Red Box has to offer. The catalogue of GPU’s we’ve developed over the years has been specifically designed to be able to provide every variation of power required for not just aviation, for the automotive, rail and military industries respectively.

Whether you need a GPU to provide start power for your aircraft, continuous power in order to carry out servicing, training and pre-flight checks on-board or a bit of both with help from our combination units, we’ll definitely have something within our range to fulfil your requirements.

Our start units have a range of voltages (12V, 24V, 26V and 28V) and power capacities available, which can help start the smallest of aircraft right up to the largest business jets. If weight is an issue, we have also produced the same range with lithium battery technology, making the units a lot lighter and more suitable to be carried on-board if required.

Our 28V DC continuous units are mains-powered (with the exception of our TC400/28 range, which are battery cart units) and are employed to provide the cleanest possible DC power unit, allowing operators to continuously power their aircraft whilst practicing the use of the avionics or to perform system updates. The products range from 25 amps up to 600 amps, higher power can also be manufactured upon request. These units can switch between two voltages, set at 14V and 28V as standard, but we can adjust this for you if necessary. The TC400/28C units are battery powered continuous power supplies, allowing continuous power for a limited time only. An amber beacon is fitted to indicate low voltage on the unit. Additionally, if the voltage of the unit is monitored, you can also use this unit to start the aircraft.

Our combination units do exactly as they say on the tin. Simply put, they are a combination between our battery-powered start units and our mains-powered continuous power supply units. Depending on the model utilised, these units will supply up to 600 amps continuously when plugged into the mains. When unplugged, they can will give up to 6000 peak amps.

Our website is designed to provide all the information you need but deciding what aircraft GPU is right can be a difficult one. If you still unsure what style of GPU you require, you can use our handy Aircraft Search tool to select which units are appropriate for your aircraft. We previously laid out a few facts you should take into consideration before purchasing your first GPU as well, alongside a breakdown on both of our Lead Acid and Lithium options to help you make a more informed decision.
