Antonov An-2

The Antonov An-2 is a Soviet single-engine aircraft developed and manufactured by the Antonov Design Bureau. The design process began in 1946, responding to the 1947 Soviet Ministry of Forestry requirement for a replacement for the less powerful Polikarpov Po-2. The An-2 features all-metal construction, an enclosed cockpit, and an extended cabin that can accommodate up to 12 passengers, depending on modifications. Its design allows for operations on unsurfaced airstrips, making it suitable for various challenging roles, including scientific missions, water-bombing for forest firefighting, medevac or air ambulance, and lightly armed combat versions. The An-2’s versatility and reliability contributed to its long service life, with production continuing until 2001.
