The Dash 8 was developed based on the predecessing Dash 7, with improved performance. De Havilland announced the Series 300, part of which was the DHC-8-300A. The series was as a derivative of the previous Series 100 and 200. The company continued the use of Pratt & Whitney Canada PW123 engines, however had an extended airframe to facilitate for additional passenger seats, increasing the capacity to up to 56 seats.
