The Dornier 328 is a twin turboprop commuter airliner, developed and manufactured by Dornier Luftfahrt GmbH, and later by Fairchild-Dornier, after Fairchild Aircraft aquired Dornier in 1996. The Do 328 was developed as a response to market research conducted by the firm, indicating a demand for a quiet, easy-to maintain airliner which was able to perform at higher speeds. Dornier designed a short-haul regional aircraft, with a retractable landing gear in order to perform from unprepared runways. The Do 328 was powered by twin Pratt and Whitney PW119C engines, had a supercritical wing airfoil and was fitted with advanced avionics. These features made the aircraft popular in the airliner market.
