The Northrop Grumman Firebird (designated Model 355) is an intelligence gathering aircraft, designed and produced by Northrop Grumman’s Scaled Composites. The design was for a medium-altitude and long-endurance capable aircraft, with Burt Rutan partaking in the development before his retirement. The Firebird encorporates the twin-boom and pusher configurations, utilising a Lycoming TEO-540 powerplant. It was also installed with four modules to fit spy equipment, working through a separate system from the aircraft controls. The most significant aspect of the Firebird is that it can be flown with or without a pilot, meaning it is considered as an optionally piloted vehicle.
