The Piper PA-23 was the first twin-engine aircraft manufactured by Piper, with the aim to succed in general aviation. Piper inherited the designs for the PA-23 from Stinson Aircraft Company, when they bought the devision. However promising the plans for the aircraft seemed, the prototype performed poorly, forcing Piper to make some changes to the initial development, including an added vertical stabilizer and swapping the engine to twin Lycoming O-320-A’s, the aircraft subsequenlty receiving the Apache name.
