The Schweizer S300 series is a family of light utility helicopters, which was originally manufactured by Hughes Helicopters, based on the design of the Hughes 269. In the early 1950s, the devision Hughes conducted a survey, results presenting a demand for a light, affordable two-seat helicopter. To act upon this finding, the company began designing and building a new aircraft in 1955, designated Model 269. The helicopter was powered by a Lycoming O-360-A engine, was equipped with advanced control systems, as well as the uncommon two-bladed tail rotor. The plans of the Hughes 269 were later used to develop the S300 series by Schweizer.
