The Airbus A321 is the stretched version of its predecessor in the A320 family and has a narrow-body (single-aisle), with a retractable tricycle landing gear and is powered by two wing pylon-mounted turbofan engines. It is a low-wing cantilever monoplane with a conventional tail unit having a single vertical stabilizer and rudder. It can carry up to 236 passengers and also shares a common type rating with all of the other Airbus A320-family variants, allowing pilots who have had experience flying other models within the A320-family pilots to fly the aircraft without any further training.
To maintain the same performance of its predecessor, double-slotted flaps and minor trailing edge modifications were made which increased the wing area. The centre fuselage and undercarriage were also reinforced to accommodate the increase in maximum takeoff weight.
