The Lockheed L-1011 TriStar is a medium-to-long-range, wide-body trijet airliner developed and manufactured by Lockheed Corporation. The L-1011 was proposed for a requirement called for by American Airlines, who were in need of a new airliner, with the capacity to transport over 250 passengers transcontinentally. Lockheed’s main opponent in the competition was the Douglas DC-10, ultimately winning over the L-1011, however American Airlines remained to show plenty of interest in the model. Lockheed was eager to follow through with productions, and decided to integrate autoland and auto-descend systems into the new aircraft. The design for the L-1011 was a trijet configuration, with two of the Rolls-Royce RB211 engines wing-mounted and one embedded in the tail and fuselage mounted with an S-duct.
